• On November 1, 2022, the A-F letter grades were released by the Arizona State Board of Education. The formula that determines school labels uses a wide range of academic measures, including results from the American Association of School Administrators (AASA) test and academic growth.

The district’s overall results show excellent growth-with 10 schools moving up one letter grade and a total of 37 schools that are “A” or “B” labeled.

    * Denotes schools with an increased letter grade

This is the first time the letter grades have been calculated since 2019. The release of labels presents an opportune time to reflect on the multiple ways our district measures student learning. The A-F Accountability System is just one of those tools. Throughout the school year, there are many ways teachers assess how students are doing in the classroom, including classwork, homework, quizzes, projects and teacher and counselor observations about individual student growth.  The district also measures soft skills such as students’ ability to communicate, collaborate and think critically.

The State of Arizona requires the Arizona Department of Education to develop an annual achievement profile for every public school in the state based upon an A-F scale. The system measures year to year academic achievement on state mandated tests, such as the AASA and ACT, using both growth and proficiency measures. The letter grades also include academic achievement in ELA, Math and Science; The achievement of English Language Learners is accounted through the AZELLA test. Finally, indicators that elementary students are prepared for high school are reflected in the elementary score. Likewise, high schools scores are impacted by how ready graduates are to succeed in career or higher education.

The district is continuing to review these letter grades and is determining areas for improvement. Through the district’s strategic plan and our continuous improvement plan, some of this work has already begun at each of our schools.

As we continue to overcome the interruption to learning and reimagine what it means to educate students, we remain committed to ensuring that every student reaches their fullest potential.
