Multi-Tiered System of Support
Tier 2: The Heart

Peoria Unified School District seeks to get to the heart of the matter while supporting our students in the social emotional process. Our heart is backed by intentional and intensive supports lead by our Student Support Teams.
Every Student, Every Day

1. Intensive student support with family involvement
At the tier II level it is imperative that the student’s educational team (parent, school, student) work together to develop a plan to assist the student with intensive and supports to increase skills that will translate to positive school outcomes.

2. Small group and individual intervention
Intentional supports such as small group and individual instructions may be necessary for skill building and to assist with mastery of in addition to the daily tier I supports.

3. Community Resources
Peoria Unified School District has established relationships with community partners that will assist us in helping students who may benefit from resources not readily available on a school campus (e.g. food, clothing, immunization, support groups).
Every Teacher, Every Day

1. Intensive teacher support
Peoria Unified School District wants to ensure every teacher feels they have the resources professional and personally that will assist them in providing the best education to our students. Providing teachers with access to support via PLC’s, wellness programs, grade level teams help to foster community and value as a professional.

2. Professional Development
Providing an opportunity for relevant and practical professional development/training for teachers will help with feelings of competence and confidence in the classroom. The dynamics of the classroom and our students have changed; therefore, our teachers need to be equipped with the skills necessary to teach in an ever-changing environment.

3. Peer mentoring
Mentoring can be beneficial for both experienced as well as new teachers. Research indicates that peer mentoring can help teachers feel supported, increases performance, and reduces teacher attrition (Hollway, 2001).

4. Coaching
Coaching provides teachers with a subject matter expert that will help to empower and guide teachers in best practices through a collaborative effort that fosters informed practice, positive culture change, and reciprocal accountability (Aguilar, 2013).
Every School, Every Day

1. Intensive teacher support
The support of our teachers and staff is vital to the success of a campus and the education of our students. Providing teachers with access to support via PLC’s, wellness programs, grade level teams help to foster community and value as a professional.

2. Professional Development
In addition to the professional development provided at the district level, schools that engage in professional development/training for all staff will help to increase team morale, support, as well as feelings of competence and confidence.

3. Peer mentoring
The practice of mentorship should be modeled throughout campus. Research shows that growth in learning and practice happens with mentoring.

4. Coaching
Administrators will be available as a coach to help support, encourage and provide guidance with their team members professional goals on campus.

Peoria Unified School District is committed to providing intentional and strategic support for schools that may have a need.

Peoria Unified School District has developed a professional development system that will allow for growth and skill building of all of our staff. Providing these opportunities not only enhances the learning of the staff member, it also fosters a sense of professionalism and competency.

3. Trained Support Leaders
It is imperative that we model the expectations at the District Level by ensuring that our leaders are trained not only in their areas of expertise but also on matters that impact schools and the lives of our youth. Peoria Unified has put specific trainings in place that give all stakeholders as well as leaders the common knowledge and language to support our students.

4. District Support Team
The District Student Support Team are a group of professionals that are committed to answering the call and addressing the needs of all 42 campuses in Peoria Unified School District in the area of social emotional learning.
Parents, Every Day

1. Parent support and trainings
Peoria Unified School District is committed to fostering a positive relationship with all families in our district. We want to provide trainings and supports that will assist families in gaining an understanding on pertinent issues that may impact their student in the area of social emotional well-being.

2. Increased school team communication and support
In Peoria Unified School District, every parent is a part of their student’s educational team. When there is a need for more intensive support for your student, we want to have open and honest dialogue with the parents in a timely fashion to ensure that it is a collaborative effort in making decision to support your student.
Community Partners, Every Day

1. Provide support based on need to our schools
Community Partnerships are essential to Peoria Unified School District’s effort of supporting every student, every day. The expert knowledge that community partners have allow us to be intentional in meeting the needs of our student’s who need more support.

2. Volunteer
The impact volunteers have on schools is tremendous. Research suggest that volunteers help to create a supportive and welcoming environment. Volunteering aids in the support of learning and teaching (Henderson & Mapp, 2002)
