The first day of school is one of the most exciting days of the entire year.
The Facilities and Maintenance staff worked tirelessly all summer to ensure that all 42 schools were ready for the first day.
The Human Resources Department hired and processed over 200 new teachers across the district. They were welcomed to our district at the New Teacher Training at Centennial High School. In addition, over 100 Classified staff members were also hired during the summer.
Wednesday, August 7, we kicked off the new school year with more than 37,000 students in Peoria Unified.
For their very first school experience, we had 2,368 Kindergartners attend school.
Transportation was well-prepared with their staff for the first day in which 709 bus runs were made for morning, mid-day and afternoon arrivals and departures, transporting over 13,000 students.
The Food Service Department also reported a great first day! With staff serving-up 2,800 breakfasts and 15,000 lunch-time meals! Students enjoyed some of their favorite menu items on the first day including the popular orange chicken.
We put together a slideshow to highlight what the first day was like across the district. Let’s take a look.
