Typically, on the Friday of Spring Break we are getting ready to get back to school and in the swing of things to finish out the school year. I never imagined I would be sending you a message like this one. I hope it finds you and your family healthy and happy while you’re likely spending quite a bit of time together, the silver lining in this difficult situation. Today, Governor Ducey announced that our school closure will be extended through April 10. While I know you have received many updates from our school district, I wanted to send you a few reminders, and hopefully answers to some of your questions, as we head into next week:
Starting Monday, March 23 between 10:30 a.m. and noon, medications will be available for pick-up via a drive-thru, curbside service from our school nurse. There are very specific instructions that you will need to follow to ensure this is done in alignment with our safety procedures. Click here for the specifics before you head to school.
If you are in need of meals, our Food Service is set-up, beginning Monday, in 30 different locations around our district, unfortunately Oakwood is not one of the sites serving meals. Meals are free to children under 18 and available for $3 each to adults from 10:30 a.m. – noon. The bags include a hot or cold lunch entrée as well as breakfast for the next day. You can learn more here. This is available for all children under 18, even if they do not attend the school they picking up the food from.
There has been a lot of questions about online or distance learning and how we plan to educate kids while school is closed. Our district is working through a plan and expects to be able to share it with all parents next week. If you have questions about technology at home, like the need for a laptop or wifi, this will be addressed when the district shares the learning plan with parents. Until the plan is shared, you can use many online resources we have on our website here.
Events continue to be a little touch and go for our school. All previously scheduled meetings, athletics, arts and special events are canceled through the closure. As for promotion activities, and other school events, we aren’t sure whether or not these will go on as planned. When we know, we’ll let you know.
Our district is updating a page on the website with a list of frequently asked questions. Please visit www.peoriaunified.org/coronavirus to see all the resources and view the FAQ.
In the coming days, you will be getting a personal phone call from one of our teaching or support staff to check in on your family. While we can’t connect in person, we are so looking forward to hearing your voice so we know how you’re coping and to see if we can address any needs or concerns. Until then, we hope that you are taking care of yourself and each other. Please give your children a hug from all of us at Oakwood. We can’t wait to see their smiling faces back on our campus!
If there is anything we can do to further support you or your student, please let me know.
