School Closure Update

Liberty Families,

We know you have all heard that Governor Ducey and Superintendent Hoffman have officially closed Arizona schools for the remainder of the year.  Although we are saddened by this news, we also know that it is a necessary move to keep our students, families and staff safe during the COVID-19 pandemic.

We are receiving many questions with regard to required work and issuance of grades.  Initially we believed that enrichment activities to keep students engaged in learning through April 10th would be sufficient.  However, in light of schools being closed for the remainder of the year, we may have to slightly adjust our thinking.  We want our staff to embrace the philosophy, “Love before lessons.  Patience before programs.  Relationships before rigor.  Grace before grades.”  We realize that everyone is operating with a unique set of circumstances at home.  We also want to continue to encourage all students, as we always have, to take full advantage of the educational opportunities being presented to them at this time.  We know that, as in any situation, you get out of something, whatever you put into it.  We don’t want to be punitive, but we do want our students to continue learning.  Our teachers are working hard to provide activities, lessons, projects to support ongoing learning for the remainder of the year, and we expect our students to take full advantage of those opportunities.  Not doing so could have adverse ramifications…lack of preparation and prerequisite knowledge for future course selections for one.  Liberty High School has a long history of academic excellence, and there’s no reason we can’t continue the excellence through this pandemic.  Parents, please encourage your students to complete teacher assignments to the very best of their abilities and circumstances.  Students, take advantage of every educational opportunity presented to you.   Our teachers will take care of the rest.

We will continue to communicate any changes in expectations as our district monitors and adjusts for the current situation. 

Here are the answers to some frequently asked questions

  1.  Computers—Families may call IMT and make an appointment to pick up a computer starting Wednesday. Appointments will begin on Thursday. 623-486-6138
  1. Computer assistance—Many of the questions can be answered by the teachers. Currently students are being directed to contact the District Help Desk with any technology issues. or 623-486-6138
  1. Yearbooks— Our yearbook publisher is still accepting online pre-orders until April 10 (next Friday).  We are working with them to hopefully extend the date even further to accommodate families who may be struggling during this time.  Once an online pre-order is completed they will send liberty your purchase information.  Please keep your purchase confirmation e-mail.  Once we get word from the publisher on expected delivery date (tentatively in mid-May), we will communicate our plans for distribution.
  1. Retrieving/Returning Items—We have had requests to retrieve items from lockers and classrooms as well as requests to return school items.  Please see the attached document for details outlining our plan for next week Wednesday, April 8th & Thursday April 9thStudent Item Pick Up and Drop Off Schedule
