Fiscal Stewardship in Peoria Unified

In an era where public trust in institutions is often tested, Peoria Unified School District continues to stand as a model of transparency, accountability and fiscal stewardship. Our commitment to responsible financial management isn’t just a line item in a strategic plan; it’s a foundational value that guides every decision we make.

While I am new to Peoria Unified, I am well aware of our legacy of strong financial reporting, fiscal transparency and conservative spending. I am committed to continuing this tradition and ensuring the district is well prepared for the future.

This year, Peoria Unified was once again honored with the Certificate of Excellence in Financial Reporting by the Association of School Business Officials International (ASBO). This prestigious recognition, awarded for our Annual Comprehensive Financial Report (ACFR) for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2024, marks over 30 consecutive years of excellence in financial reporting.

Public education is one of the most significant investments a community can make. In Peoria Unified, we take that responsibility seriously. Every dollar entrusted to us is a dollar invested in the future of our students, our staff, and our neighborhoods. Our financial reports, published annually, are accessible online, with more than a decade of data available to the public. This level of transparency is rare, and it’s intentional.

We know that sound financial practices support bond ratings, community confidence, and the long-term sustainability of our programs. Whether it’s arts education, career and technical education, or special education services, our ability to deliver high-quality instruction depends on our ability to be a good steward of our resources.

From energy-efficient upgrades to competitive compensation packages for staff, we’re constantly evaluating how to maximize impact while minimizing waste.

Our financial team works tirelessly to ensure that our budget aligns with our values. That means investing in student success, safety and well-being, and community connection all while maintaining fiscal discipline.

As we celebrate this milestone, we also look ahead. The challenges facing public education from inflation to enrollment shifts require ongoing vigilance and innovation. With the continued support of our families, staff, and community partners, Peoria Unified is well-positioned to meet those challenges head-on.

We invite our community to explore our financial reports, attend budget hearings and engage with us in shaping the future. Because fiscal stewardship isn’t just about numbers. It’s about trust; in Peoria Unified, that trust is earned every day.

If you still have questions about the financial state of the district, I invite you to join us for School Finance Live at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 8 on all of Peoria Unified’s social media channels.
