In every school, there are individuals who quietly shape the culture, uplift the community and leave an indelible mark on the lives of students and staff. At Copperwood Elementary, that person is Toby Ramirez, affectionately known as “Mr. R.” A former student of Copperwood himself, Ramirez has returned to the campus which helped him to thrive. His journey from crossing guard to library paraprofessional, coach and student council advisor is representative of his commitment to education and his deep-rooted love for the Copperwood community.
From his earliest days on campus, he stood out for his initiative and genuine care for others. As a crossing guard, he didn’t simply help students cross the street; he greeted each child by name, learned their interests and made them feel seen. This seemingly small act had a profound impact. Parents and staff alike began to take note as Ramirez’s morning greetings set a positive tone for the entire day. One parent shared how her son’s entire school experience was shaped by Toby’s cheerful presence at the crosswalk, calling him “the face of Copperwood.”
But Ramirez’s contributions extend far beyond the curb. As the school librarian, he has transformed the library into a sanctuary of learning, creativity and belonging. His storytelling is described as “magical,” with a demeanor reminiscent of Mr. Rogers. Students, even those in junior high, eagerly volunteer to help in the library during their free time. He doesn’t just teach students about books; he teaches them to love reading, to explore new ideas and to find joy in learning. His ability to connect with students of all ages, to recommend the perfect book, and to make each child feel special is nothing short of extraordinary.
Ramirez’s impact is not limited to the library. He is a coach, mentor and leader. As the girls’ softball coach, he not only teaches the fundamentals of the game but instills values of teamwork, resilience, and sportsmanship. His involvement in Student Council has empowered students to take initiative, develop leadership skills and contribute meaningfully to their school community. Whether he’s helping students create posters, plan events, or simply lending a listening ear, Ramirez is always present, always supportive and always encouraging.
What sets Ramirez apart is his authenticity. He doesn’t perform acts of kindness for recognition; he does them because it’s who he is. He is the first to volunteer, the first to offer help and the last to leave. When a fellow crossing guard was injured, Toby didn’t hesitate to step into the role to ensure the safety of his colleagues and students. His bravery, selflessness and sense of responsibility are qualities that inspire those around him.
Ramirez’s colleagues speak of him with admiration and affection. Teachers describe him as a natural educator, someone who demonstrates the same instructional skill and classroom presence as the seasoned professionals. He is firm yet compassionate, setting clear expectations while nurturing students’ growth. His lessons align with classroom standards, and his creative approach makes learning engaging and meaningful. It’s no surprise that he has recently reenrolled in college to pursue his teaching degree—a decision that has been met with enthusiastic support from the entire Copperwood staff.
Parents, too, sing Ramirez’s praises. “Above all, what truly sets Mr. R apart is the authentic care and concern he shows for the Copperwood community. He can be seen taking on many roles throughout the school to support students, staff and parents. He fills in for crossing guard duties at times, takes turns supervising student drop-offs in the morning, and is a fixture at extracurricular events,” shared Mr. and Mrs. Bustamante.
Another parent shared how Ramirez cheered for her son from his car window after learning he had been cast in the school musical. These moments, though small in the grand scheme, are monumental in the lives of the children and families he touches.
Ramirez’s mother, who also works at Copperwood, shared, “Beyond his professional obligations, Mr. Ramirez is known for his caring and unselfish nature. He supports staff and students whether it’s by guiding them to find the perfect book or offering a listening ear and helpful advice. His kindness has left a lasting impression on many, making the library a cherished haven for all.”
Ramirez’s influence also extends to his peers. He is known for his positive attitude, his collaborative spirit, and his willingness to go above and beyond. He covers classes, helps with events, and supports his colleagues in countless ways. His presence uplifts the entire campus, creating a culture of kindness, respect, and unity. As one teacher put it, “To be around him is to feel better about oneself.”
In every role he has taken on—whether as a crossing guard, instructional assistant, librarian, coach, or advisor—Ramirez has exemplified the values of the Peoria Unified School District. He is a strong supporter of the district’s mission, a tireless advocate for students, and a role model for staff. He demonstrates initiative, professionalism, and a relentless drive for personal and professional growth. He is, in every sense, the embodiment of “Every student, every day, prepared to shape tomorrow.”
Toby Ramirez is the heart of Copperwood Elementary. His story is one of dedication, compassion, and quiet heroism. He doesn’t seek the spotlight, but his light shines brightly in every corner of the campus. He has touched the lives of hundreds of students, inspired his colleagues, and strengthened the Copperwood community in immeasurable ways.
This spring, Peoria Unified highlighted 40 staff members across the district who make a similar impact on the lives of students. These individuals are referred to as the Pride of Peoria.
