Over 60 students from across Peoria Unified gathered for the inaugural Project Citizen District Showcase on Tuesday, Feb. 3. These students displayed their hard work and creativity as they presented their research, offered solutions and proposed action plans for real-world issues. This year’s winning team led by Mrs. Angela Ward, eighth grade teacher, included five students from Sunset Heights Elementary School: Aubree Freiwald, Grayson Horton, Savannah Howey, Tristen Olsen and Logan Wagner-Corona.
Project Citizen, a civic education program, serves to promote student interest and ability to participate in state, local and federal government. This event served as a steppingstone as students prepare to participate in the Project Citizen state showcase with conditions created to best replicate a state showcase.
“I am proud of these students and the commitment they have shown to becoming engaged citizens of our community, state and nation,” shared Deputy Superintendent of Educational Services Dr. Teresa Hernandez. “This is an exciting event, and I look forward to how Project Citizen becomes a staple for our students.”
Peoria Unified is proud to provide a robust civic education including 9/11 Education Day, Constitution Day, Veterans Day events, the annual Patriotic Speech Contest, active initiatives to encourage students to register to vote and the opportunity to receive the Arizona State Seal of Civics Literacy.
