Aubree Freiwald, Grayson Horton, Savannah Howey, Tristen Olsen and Logan Wagner-Corona from Sunset Heights Elementary School, showcased their civic engagement and research skills, earning a Superior rating at the Project Citizen National Showcase for their project titled, “Heat-Related Deaths on Hikes.” The team’s work was evaluated by national showcase reviewers, who awarded the project a Superior rating, the highest available rating, in recognition of the team’s research, critical thinking and civic engagement.

These students examined the challenges posed by hiking in Arizona’s extreme heat and proposed public policy to support the safety of hikers. Through research and analysis, the team explored ways local government and community partners can work together to improve public safety.

“Our Sunset Heights students demonstrated the very best of what civic education can accomplish,” said Tahlya Visintainer, Peoria Unified Interim Superintendent. “By identifying a real-world issue, conducting meaningful research and proposing solutions that can make a difference in their community, these students exemplified the power of student voice and the importance of active citizenship. We are incredibly proud of their achievement at the national level as they showcased the high-quality civic education taking place in our classrooms.”

Participation in Project Citizen provides students with opportunities to develop collaboration, public speaking, research and problem-solving skills while gaining a deeper understanding of how government works and how citizens can help address community challenges. Project Citizen was first hosted by Peoria Unified during the 2025-26 school year, and the district is eager to see how this program grows in the future.
