With the November election approaching, residents across the Peoria Unified School District will have the opportunity to weigh in on several education-related ballot measures that could impact local schools, district operations and future funding. The propositions on the ballot address a range of issues, from how school funding is allocated in classrooms to the continuation of district programs and the potential use of district-owned properties.
The ballot includes:
Proposition 320, a statewide ballot measure that would require certain Arizona school districts, including Peoria Unified, to spend at least 60% of their operational funding on direct instructional expenses.
Proposition 428, a Peoria Unified budget override continuation measure that would provide the district with $32 million in funding to support people and programs. If approved, Prop 428 would:
Attract and retain highly qualified teachers
Maintain full-day kindergarten and other specialized programs (such as enhanced reading and gifted)
Provide special area instruction (such as art, music, band, chorus, languages, physical education, etc.)
Keep class sizes manageable
Fund a portion of all staff salaries
Continue Nurses – Health Services
Sustain athletics and extracurricular activities
Allocate funding for assistant principals
Proposition 429, a Peoria Unified measure that would authorize, but not require, the Governing Board to sell, lease or exchange the District Administration Center, 6330 W. Thunderbird Road in Glendale, and Kachina Elementary School, 5304 W. Crocus Drive in Glendale, properties.
Community members are encouraged to research each measure, review official voter materials and participate in the election process. Decisions made by voters helps shape the future of public education in the district and may have lasting effects on students, staff, and educational programs.
Early voting and Election Day voting options are available to eligible voters. Residents should verify their voter registration status, review their ballot in advance and make a plan to vote. For election information, including voter resources and polling locations, visit www.maricopa.vote.
