Centennial Fall Athletics Resume Phase I - July 27, 2020

    Dear Centennial Families,

Peoria Unified takes guidance from the AIA for athletics. According to the AIA, the fall sports season will begin on August 17th. In order to prepare our fall sports student athletes for the upcoming season, Peoria Unified will initiate a Phase 1 restart of our athletic program on Monday, July 27th, with heavy restrictions. Only Fall Sports athletes will return to activity.

    Phase 1 Beginning July 27

    • Winter and Spring sports are still shut down and will be phased in starting September 8th.
    • Temperature checks will continue.
    • The weight room is now closed.
    • ALL coaches will wear a mask
    • ALL students will wear a mask before and after activities (once a socially distanced cool down period has occurred).  A mask can only be removed during exercise/workouts.
    • We will continue to adhere to Peoria Unified's summer return-to-play guidelines, explained below:

    Mandatory Pre-Workout Screening:

    1. All participants should be temperature screened for signs/symptoms of COVID-19 prior to workout.
    2. Any temperature (>100) reported should not be allowed in workouts and should contact a doctor.

    Phase 1: July 27 – August 1st

    • FOCUS: Acclimating students back to activity, heat acclimatization, and conditioning.
    • No group activity of more than 10 athletes at a time.  Multiple groups are allowed keeping social distance.
    • Individual drills are permissible.
    • Weight rooms are CLOSED.
    • Locker rooms should not be utilized.
    • Contact is not allowed between athletes. Minimum distance of 6 feet between athletes at all times.
    • Hand washing should be conducted at regular intervals.
    • Weight equipment should be wiped down thoroughly before and after each use.
    • No shared athletic equipment between students (balls, weights, etc.).
    • All athletes shall bring their own water bottle. Water bottles must not be shared.
    • Hydration stations (water cows, water jugs, water fountains, etc.) should not be utilized.

As always, please feel free to contact our office if we can provide assistance or answer questions.

    Coyote Strong,

    Mr. Jelovic

    Assistant Principal and Athletic Director

On behalf of our Athletic Director, Mr. Jelovic:

The current closure for all summer activities will continue through July 26th for all PUSD high schools.  The present situation will be revisited and an update will be provided to our community next week regarding the possible return to campus on the 27th.  Our top priority is the safety of our students and staff.

Your individual coaches will continue providing updates for their respective teams.  Please feel free to call the Athletic Department if you have any questions.

    *revised 7/15/2020

    Dear Centennial Parents and Athletes,

Due to the sustained rises in COVID-19 infection rates and recent announcements from Governor Ducey and the AIA, all Centennial summer athletic activities are immediately postponed through Sunday, July 12th. We will communicate if conditions improve to allow for the Phase 1 resumption of any camps and clinics.

As you know, yesterday Governor Ducey delayed the start of in-person schooling. In response, the Arizona Interscholastic Association delayed the start date of fall sports and indicated plans to create alternative sports schedules. Please click here to read the AIA's article.

All of this news obviously leaves us with many questions about athletics and school in general. Centennial and the Peoria Unified School District will continue to provide updates as soon as we have them. In the meantime, as you share this disappointing news with your Coyotes, please let them know that we look forward to seeing them back on campus, as soon as safely possible.

    Mr. Jelovic

    Assistant Principal and Athletic Director
